she sits in the deafening silence
as the phone doesn't ring
while the dog
is howling at an empty moon
.
finding the path
on a starless night
she wanders watching
for the edge of the cliff
before she falls
knowing it's already too late
the freefall won't kill her
but will strengthen her desire
to not fall again
from the edge of the cliff
that she walked
on a starless night
while the dog howled
at the empty moon
.
the deafening silence
of an unringing phone
is enough to make a sane man weep
for the comfort of the edge of the cliff
where he could fall and know that
the bottom doesn't exist and
he won't die but neither will he live
because the empty moon
won't cry for him
the way she did
when she saw him jump
.
all the while knowing
that the phone wasn't ringing
in the loud silence
and echoing off the empty walls
of a-home-that-never-was
before he jumped
leaving her to wander
the starless path
under an empty moon
.
the disconnected phone
sits forlornly
on the abandoned floor
as she walks in the sun
along the cliff
with the dog
at her heels
